A Simple Summary of Shakespeares Hamlet

William Shakespeares famous work Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is a tragedy set across five acts written around the year 1600. More than just a revenge play, Hamlet deals with questions about life and existence, sanity, love, death, and betrayal. It is one of the most quoted works of literature in the world, and since 1960 it has been translated into 75 languages (including Klingon). The Action Begins Otherworldly As the play begins, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is visited by a mysterious ghost resembling his recently-deceased father the king. The ghost tells Hamlet that his father was murdered by Claudius, the king’s brother, who then took the throne and married Hamlet’s mother Gertrude. The ghost encourages Hamlet to avenge his father’s death by killing Claudius. The task before Hamlet weighs heavily upon him. Is the ghost evil, trying to tempt him to do something that will send his soul to hell for eternity? Hamlet questions whether the specter is to be believed. Hamlet’s uncertainty, anguish, and grief are what makes the character so believable. He is arguably one of literature’s most psychologically complex characters. He is slow to take action, but when he does it is rash and violent. We can see this in the famous â€Å"curtain scene† when Hamlet kills Polonius. Hamlet’s Love Polonius’ daughter Ophelia is in love with Hamlet, but their relationship has broken down since Hamlet learned of his father’s death. Ophelia is instructed by Polonius and Laertes to spurn Hamlet’s advances. Ultimately, Ophelia commits suicide as a result of Hamlet’s confusing behavior toward her and the death of her father. A Play Within a Play In Act 3, Scene 2, Hamlet organizes actors to re-enact his father’s murder at the hands of Claudius in order to gauge Claudius’ reaction. He confronts his mother about his father’s murder and hears someone behind the arras. Believing it to be Claudius, Hamlet stabs the man with his sword. It transpires that he has actually killed Polonius. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Claudius realizes that Hamlet is out to get him and professes that Hamlet is mad. Claudius arranges for Hamlet to be shipped to England with his former friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, who have been informing the king about Hamlet’s state of mind. Claudius has secretly sent orders for Hamlet to be killed on arrival in England, but Hamlet escapes from the ship and swaps his death order for a letter ordering the deaths of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. To Be or Not to Be †¦ Hamlet arrives back in Denmark just as Ophelia is being buried, which prompts him to contemplate life, death, and the frailty of the human condition. The performance of this soliloquy is a big part of how any actor portraying Hamlet is judged by critics.  Ã‚   Tragic Ending Laertes returns from France to avenge the death of Polonius, his father. Claudius plots with him to make Hamlet’s death appear accidental and encourages him to anoint his sword with poison. He also puts a cup of poison aside, in case the sword is unsuccessful. In the action, the swords are swapped and Laertes is mortally wounded with the poisoned sword after striking Hamlet with it. He forgives Hamlet before he dies. Gertrude dies by accidentally drinking the cup of poison. Hamlet stabs Claudius and forces him to drink the rest of the poisoned drink. Hamlets revenge  is finally complete. In his dying moments, he bequeaths the throne to Fortinbras and prevents Horatios suicide by imploring him to stay alive to tell the tale.

My Experience With Applied Psychology - 1380 Words

What Applied Psychology Means to Me Applied psychology means various things to me, but more importantly it represents the lense through which we examine the world around us and our relationship with each other. When we expand our minds and open our ears to the ideas and thoughts of other people besides ourselves, we effectively apply psychology to our daily life and the challenges that face us. I believe that applied psychology does not represent a particular thing but rather a fluidness that flows in and out of our minds both consciously and unconsciously. The three life themes which most critically relate to my experience with applied psychology in my life include: college life, family life, and my challenges. These three critical areas indicate where I actively see applications of psychology in my life thus far. Rodrigo Duterte’s Early Presidency Free Essays

Christian B. Mendoza Speech 30 THX-3 2018 – 00308 Prof. Mary Jannette Pinzon A Duterte Reader: Critical Essays on Rodrigo Duterte’s Early Presidency by Nicole Curato (editor) Philippine political landscape is always subject to change, with the emergence of conflicting political ideologies embodied and practiced by former and current political leaders. We will write a custom essay sample on Rodrigo Duterte’s Early Presidency or any similar topic only for you Order Now One of the defining beacons in the Philippine history was the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution––a nonviolent mass demonstration that sought to overthrow the dictatorial regime of Ferdinand Marcos. Since then, governance in the Philippines has been consistent with â€Å"the reformist, albeit elitist, narrative of the liberal democratic regime† (Teehankee, 2016), as opposed to the authoritarian regime of Marcos. A shift to another form of government, however, does not necessarily mean that the country’s condition would be improved in all aspects. In fact, people in authority have failed to deliver on their promises of initiating much needed reforms to conceive remarkable socioeconomic and political transformations. Therefore, the public’s petition to bring about drastic solutions to the ills of the country was fulfilled by the sweeping electoral triumph of a former prosecutor and long-time mayor of Davao City, Rodrigo Roa Duterte, who now serves as the 16th and current president of the republic. Written by several scholars in academic disciplines, A Duterte Reader endeavors to understand the type of regime that the country now faces under the Duterte administration. It seeks to establish the factors that led to Duterte’s landslide electoral victory in the 2016 presidential elections, and to examine the origin and level of support that the public has for his deadly â€Å"war on drugs,† which he vehemently declared to be the most pressing issue in the country. Moreover, the book sheds light on the legacy of American Imperialism in the country, and how it became a catalyst or one of the immediate causes to ignite a revolution among Filipino people, who have long been subject to systemic oppressions triggered by the machinations of the ruling class and the culture of elitism that it has instituted. The most striking parts of the book are the obvious manifestations of Duterte’s presidential campaign slogan: â€Å"Change is coming.† Since his inauguration as the 16th President of the Philippines last June 30, 2016, these manifestations have surfaced in ways that prompted the public to engage in political discourse over all forms of social media. The driving force behind the citizens’ political participation is that there is someone who finally recognizes their repressed anger towards social, economic and political injustices from which they have been suffering since the prevalence of elitism emanating from liberal democracy. To counter these injustices, Duterte has acutely focused on the obliteration of the illegal drug trade in the country through his controversial â€Å"war on drugs.† The rampant extrajudicial killings executed by corrupt police officers and vigilantes, who have no regard for the victims’ human rights, are being justified by Duterte’s portrayal of drug trade as something that poses a major threat to society and national security. Meanwhile, a certain chapter in the book was interesting to read in a sense that it is constantly encountered by people who use various social media platforms. Written by Cabaà ±es and Cornelio, The Rise of Trolls in the Philippines discusses the emergence of online political trolls, and its impact to promoting a democratic media in the country. This chapter also introduces Mocha Uson, a key figure in contemporary Philippine social media, who has branded herself as the voice of the ordinary people. The opportunity to enumerate the times when she has deliberately spread ‘fake news’ in social media (Arias, 2017) was neglected by these two contributors. A Duterte Reader enables the readers to be mindful and critical of the affairs unfolding before their very eyes, especially in an era where the proliferation of disinformation, or commonly referred to as â€Å"fake news,† has hindered netizens from objectively engaging in political discourse online (Bueno, 2017). The book gives a panoramic view of the Philippine political history, starting from the historic EDSA Revolution to an impending shift to a federal system of government under the Duterte regime, which would certainly leave a long-lasting impact to the country’s political landscape. In addition, the book allows the readers to scrutinize the reasons why some people constantly extend their support for Duterte, or why they should not turn a blind eye to how Duterte intends to solve these issues. Between the pages of the book is a message––similar to the one that went viral online last March 2018––for the readers to ponder on: â€Å"Kapag namulat ka sa katotohanan, kasalanan na ang pumikit,† roughly translating to: Once you’ve opened your eyes to the truth, it’s a mistake to close them again. Based from the plethora of insights that the contributors have provided in this book, the readers should be able to discern this message. The book was written from a third-person point of view since the contributors wanted to discuss the factors affecting the politics of Duterte in an objective manner; thus, presenting both sides of the matter accordingly. The readers could somehow agree with what the contributors have stated regarding the several affairs of the country. They could observe the relevance of the information contained in the book when Duterte delivered his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July 23, 2018. He discussed the topics about different sectors such as businesses, conditions of the OFWs, his â€Å"War on Drugs,† foreign relations, agrarian sector, and tax reforms (Ranada, 2018). Some of the root causes of the points highlighted in his speech––persistent intervention of the American government in domestic political and economic affairs, and the incompetence of the previous administrations––have been thoroughly analyzed by the contributors. Moreover, it is important to recognize the contribution that the book offers to the public since everything they have included in the book is a product of Duterte’s persuasive public speeches, which hinge on the three primary elements of Aristotle’s Model of Communication: ethos, pathos and logos (Timonera, 2018). As each chapter is written through comprehensive research, coupled with an array of trustworthy references, the book could be included in the auxiliary reading materials for students of various academic fields, specifically students of politics; or could be used by authors and researchers as their reference material when writing about certain issues that the book failed to include. Nevertheless, the book is certainly for anyone who wants to fathom this confounding event in the history of Philippine politics. References: Arias, J. (2017). A list of Mocha Uson’s fake news posts. Role Of Diplomacy In International Relations Essay Example For Students

Role Of Diplomacy In International Relations Essay If Western diplomacy has a role to play it will have to be discreet and carefully considered, always bearing in mind that the governing rule of diplomats, like that of doctors, must be first, do no harm. ( Monteagle) This thought, taken form The Clash of the Civilizations article, succinctly puts forth the ideas that I, as a diplomat learned throughout the Nations Game simulation. Diplomacy carries out the policy that nations have set. In order to carry out policy diplomats must use tactics and strategies within prescribed guidelines. The primary tool, which was most often used during the nations simulation, was negotiation. Most diplomacy is secret, though results are usually made public. The goal of diplomacy is to further the states interests without causing resentment. Diplomacy is an alternative to war to achieve a nations goals. Its weapon is words. Diplomacy may employ persuasive threats, but is usually peaceful. Diplomacy seeks to strengthen the state, gaining advantages and allies while neutralizing its opponents. Thus, it tries to create good will toward the state it represents (Britannica). The role of diplomacy during the nations simulation was very important. Envoys had to be shrewd. In order to further ones country, the diplomat had to know exactly what they needed and not back down. For example, the country of Libertania decided early on that it must concentrate on point totals. Political alliances were of secondary importance to them. Press releases were less focused on good will toward other countries, but more on setting up trade appointments. When rumors of war began to brew, Libertania immediately looked at point totals and choose a country strong in military to ally with. Ideological alliances were not at the forefront of Libertanias strategy. Libertanian women were concerned about slavery and conditions of women in other countries, but were more concerned about our own country progressing economically. Once Libertania was in a strong economic state , then it could use diplomats to bring their political beliefs to the continent. Outside sources, such as the World Council, at first glance thought Libertania had diplomatic failures. However, it was the complete opposite. Libertania was able to move forward through diplomatic treaties. For example, counties such as Crock gave Libertania hundreds of point totals in exchange for signing an ecological preserve pact to protect the Vastlands. Libertania gave up claims to both Land disputes which to outsides seemed to be foolish, costly mistakes. Conversely, they were ingenious maneuvers which allowed Libertania to collect more points. Other countries were delighted to trade us hundreds of point totals for a piece of land that would only yield a couple hundred points. One treaty with Zamboni was a clear victory for Libertania. The pact included a trade of some squirtite that was abundant in Libertania and a land dispute in return for guerrillas, the Presidents daughter and a female diplomat. Libertania gained 600 points for the acquisition of a female diplomat alone, so the loss of the land meant nothing to the country. Despite the written and signed treaty Zamboni claimed that the female diplomat did not agree to defect, therefore breaking the agreement. Libertania decided that if Zamboni was going to break part of the pact, all components were null and void. The dispute almost went before the world council. However, at the last moment war was declared against Zamboni and they promised Libertania the female diplomats and extra points in return for our vote. A similar type of situation is currently occurring across the globe. The United States is trying to take back parts of previous agreements with Russia, previously the USSR. Russia contends, that if one treaty is invalid because there is no longer a USSR, then all arrangements between the two superpowers are groundless. Diplomacy is an extremely important part of International Relations for the future. A democratic government is only as strong as its institutions (Copeland). .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648 , .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648 .postImageUrl , .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648 , .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648:hover , .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648:visited , .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648:active { border:0!important; } .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648:active , .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648 .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud8f4d3f1447fa53114a7735cd1c7f648:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: To Kill A Mockingbirdz Essay One of the strongest institutions is that of the diplomat. Inventory Policy Example

Inventory Policy Example Inventory Policy – Essay Example Inventory policy Task: Wal-Mart seeks to provide its clientele with products at reduced prices. This means that the entity has to reduce its cost. Thus, enabling the entity to provide its consumers with merchandise at lower prices and maintain its profitability margin since the entity is profit motivated. Wal-Mart stores replicate the inventory policy provided by the central management. This has ensured consistency in the operations of the entity. Wal-Mart is the top retailing body internationally. Consequently, this write up will refer to one of its stores in California. Wal-Mart sells diverse goods. Therefore, the entity’s inventory policy varies depending on the nature of the merchandise, accessibility of warehouses and the accord with the supplier (SAS Publishing, 2006). Wal-Mart supercenter 7011 Main Street is the reference retail store that this write-up will utilize to tackle inventory policy. This store sells an enormous quantity of goods. From their data, it is tricky to determine the various stock levels. However, what is evident is that the purchasing rate and the nature of commodity have central implications on the inventory policy of Wal-Mart supercentre. For a commodity that is in demand, the store maintains a relatively higher stock level. This prevents rampant incidences of stock-out that would have negative implications on Wal-Mart supercentre. If the commodity is perishable, the entity will take a cautious approach in making purchases since the entity seeks to eliminate any losses that result from purchases. This means that such a product will have a low stock level. Additionally, such a commodity would have minimal safety stock. Conversely, commodities that are first moving have considerably greater safety stocks. This eliminates any c hances of stock-out (Wu, 2008). It is worth noting that Wal-Mart operates on an exceedingly strict inventory policy. As such, the entity fines any supplier that delivers goods earlier or past the delivery period stated in the supply agreement. The strict policy ensures that stores such as Wal-Mart supercenter do not incur needless expenses. A Wal-Mart supercenter manager reveals that the inventory policy is critical as the outlet receives an enormous volume of supplies. As such, it is crucial to guarantee that the store receives the right quantity of purchases at the appropriate time. Furthermore, Wal-Mart supercenter’s inventory policy has enabled the entity to manage its holding space. Stores incur holding cost for stock held. Therefore, Wal-Mart supercenter inventory policy enables the entity to manage its holding cost by establishing appropriate re-order levels for each commodity. Establishing a re-order level will require Wal-Mart supercenter to consider the lead-time, which is the time that the supplie r requires to make a delivery. Consideration of lead-time is critical as it ensures that the store does not suffer stock-out before arrival of suppliers (Ahiska, 2008). Wal-Mart supercenter’s inventory policy is complex since the entity deals in diverse products. Thus, it is challenging to state all the stock levels of the goods in the entity. However, this write-up elaborates the assorted factors that determine the inventory policy. Such factors include the nature of commodity, lead-time, the rate at which consumer purchase the product and the purchase agreements. Wal-Mart Supercenter has integrated applications that manage its inventory based on the above factors. References Ahiska, S. (2008).
